Taken far too young at the age of 27, Mark Shimkets leaves behind a legacy brighter - and funnier - than most people twice his age. A proud new member of the infamous 27 Club, Mark was a rising star in stand-up comedy and quickly secured his place as the most famous Shimkets the world has known. Heaven is going to be a lot funnier with him there.
A beloved staple of the Pittsburgh comedy scene, Mark was recently honored with a spot on the wall of the Pittsburgh Improv. He served as President of The Steel City Arts Foundation, where he helped support and mentor artists of all kinds, building a stronger and more inclusive creative community. His passion for comedy wasn't just about laughs - it was about lifting others up and leaving something behind.
Over the years, Mark performed at legendary comedy clubs across the country during multiple cross-country tours with Steve Hofstetter. His talent took him international, performing in Canada - where he met the love of his life, Grace.
Mark graduated from Allegheny College in Meadville, where he studied with curiosity and drive, and was a proud member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity, forming friendships that would last his lifetime.
He is survived by his wholeheartedly devoted mother, Debbie, who never left his side during his 15-month battle with cancer; his father, Joe, whose unrelenting dad jokes may or may not have been the original spark for Mark's comedy career; his brothers, Joe and Shawn; his sisters-in-law, Tammy and Morgan; and his niece and nephew, Zoey and Owen - whom Mark adored deeply. He was especially convinced that Owen would one day become the GOAT of some sport and ultimately surpass even his own "most famous Shimkets" title. He is also survived by a host of loving aunts, uncles and cousins - none of whom he ever picked favorites among, although they constantly asked. And by countless friends who visited in a constant rotation - many traveling from other states to be with him - including his best friend Michael, who rarely left his side.
Mark was built on Arby's. He knew the meats.
He will be deeply missed by family, friends and fans alike. And thanks to his stand-up special ("Weeks to Months"), his own podcasts, and countless appearances on others, Mark's voice, wit and presence will continue to resonate for years to come - reminding us all to laugh, even when it's hard. God bless you my son, brother, friend...
Family and friends will be received at Frank F. DeBor Funeral Home, 1065 Brookline Blvd, 412-561-0380, on Wednesday, May 28, from 2 to 8 p.m.
