James R. "Dick" Young, Sr.

May 1, 1944 ~ September 20, 2022 (age 78)

Obituary

James R. Young, Sr., "Dick", of Brookline, on Tuesday, September 20, 2022, at the age of 78.  He is survived by his wife Lorraine, the love of his life, his children, Lori Ann Young, Vicki Lowmiller, James R. Young, Jr. and Suzanne (John) Toth.  He was Popi to Cheyenne, Jared, Graycen, Nathaniel, Madison and Mackenzie.  Grand Popi to Renesmee Reign.  Also survived by many loving cousins, nieces and nephews.

Dick grew up in Springfield, IL, when at the age of 18 he enlisted in the United States Air Force. While stationed in Oakdale, PA he met and married “his Bride”, Lorraine. He spent a year stationed in Alaska, and then returned to Pittsburgh, PA, which became his home with his wife for 57 years. They raised 4 children in the Brookline neighborhood of Pittsburgh. He loved his family. To him family was everything. He enjoyed supporting his children in their endeavors, watching his 6 grandchildren grow up, and was tickled beyond words when his first great grandchild arrived. He'd brag about them to anyone who would listen. Dick always had a smile on his face, a kind word to say or joke to tell and would help anyone out in any way he could. Once he met you, you always felt like family - he never met a person he didn't like.  After his time in the Air Force, Dick worked at Premier Photo along Brookline Boulevard, J & L Steel Mill, as a groundskeeper for St. Francis Convent and St. Francis Academy High School, but spent most of his life in the field of transportation, as an area sales manager for both Continental Trailways and Greyhound, and loved traveling up and down the highways. Upon his retirement, he enjoyed his work as a School Bus Driver for Bishop Canevin High School.  In his spare time he ran a group of umpires that covered many local baseball associations, was a member of the Knights of Columbus, volunteered with the Salvation Army, enjoyed spending summers at the family camp in Greenville, PA and was a true animal lover. One of his favorite things to do was to play Santa Claus for his grandchildren when they were young.

Family and friends will be received at Frank F. DeBor Funeral Home, 1065 Brookline Blvd., 412-561-0380, on Monday (9/26) from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday (9/27), at 10 a.m., in the St. Pius X Church (St. Teresa of Kolkata Parish), 3040 Pioneer Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA  15226.
