Frances Schanck Obituary

Frances T. (Valenta) Schanck

On Tuesday, December 5, 2023, with her beloved husband by her side, 94-year-old Frances T. Schanck, gained her wings, as she left to walk with angels. Born and raised on the “slopes” of the southside of Pittsburgh, she remained a lifelong native and lover of everything and everyone Pittsburgh – the town of steely strength and resilience. Frances was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, cousin, and friend. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

When anyone else would have broken, Frances remained strong. Through her, we know what resilience and perseverance look like. There was no quit in Frances. Just because she is no longer here, it does not mean she lost her fighting spirit for those she loved and what she believed. And it certainly does not mean she will not keep showing up in our hearts and minds.

Frances is survived by her treasured and devoted husband, Francis L. Schanck (Yes…., they share the same name!). Frances is the loving mother of John W. Schanck (Judi), Keith D. Schanck, Denise T. McNerney (Robert), and Joan F. Schanck (Phyllis); loving grandmother of Jennifer Riordan, John Schanck, Kristin Smyth, Christopher Schanck, Jolie Jordan, Christy Mikolaj, Patrick McNerney, and the late Timothy McNerney and seven great grandchildren. She was also a cherished and loved sister of eight siblings who have passed: the late Carl Valenta, Miles Valenta, John Valenta, Mary Gatz, Irene Valenta, Marge Valenta, Helen Rusanko, and Annamae Svienty. She is survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Family and friends will be received Sunday, December 10th  from 2-6 PM at the FRANK F DEBOR FUNERAL HOME, 1065 Brookline Blvd, Pittsburgh, PA 15226. Mass will be offered at the St. Teresa of Kolkata Parish, St. Pius X Church, 3040 Pioneer Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15226 on Monday, December 11th, at 10:00 AM with invitation to lunch memorial following.

Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes in the morning.
