Edith Mierzwa (Sergi), of Brookline, passed away on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, at the age of 84.
A devout Catholic and a staple of the Brookline community, Edith owned and operated Edie’s Hair Care for nearly 40 years. She followed in the entrepreneurial footsteps of her father, Joseph A. Sergi, who went from tailoring for Hollywood royalty on Sunset Boulevard to owning a beloved local tailor shop on Brookline Boulevard, later operated by her mother, Alberta D. Sergi.
Edith was cherished not only for her talents, but also for her mischievous humor and deeply compassionate nature. She had a remarkable touch for making everyone feel seen, supported, and valued, often walking to the homes of clients who could no longer travel to ensure they felt cared for and looked their best. To her, the shop was more than a business—it was a way to share kindness with her community and a frequent social hub for her regulars and friends.
Upon closing her shop, Edith continued to see many of her longtime clients out of her home—people who wouldn’t go anywhere else. In doing so, she strengthened the relationships she had built over the years, which had grown into something far beyond a career. These visits often included home-cooked meals, deep conversations, and time spent with family members who would stop by to join in.
In true Italian-American fashion, Edith’s love for her friends and work was surpassed only by her love for her family. She adored the simple things, like going out to dinner, and especially looked forward to vacations, with trips to the beach and Disney World among her favorites. What meant the most to her, however, was making sure those she loved were right there with her. She took great pride in bringing everyone together and making those experiences something special and shared.
Edith never forgot a birthday, never missed a chance to share her kindness, and always seemed to know the perfect gift for someone. Her investment in the lives of those she loved was her most remarkable talent and the greatest gift she ever shared.
Edith was the cherished daughter of the late Joseph A. Sergi and Alberta D. Sergi (Mazza).
She is survived by her loving children: Michael Quaill (Sharon), Laurie Quaill, and Linda Mierzwa. She was the loving sister of Shirley Berchok (Gerry) and Patti Yuiska (Tom).
Edith was a proud and deeply devoted grandmother to JR Quaill, Tommy Sasser, Christopher Pugh, Bobby Sasser, Marlana Quaill, and Luke Quaill, and was preceded in death by her beloved grandson, William Sasser. Much to her delight, she was also the great-grandmother of Lilah Quaill and Jaiden Gunderlach. Her grandchildren were among her greatest joys, and she took immense pride in being a constant presence in their lives.
Edith will also be deeply missed by her dear aunt, Bernadette Mazza, and her children, Michele and Jeffery, as well as countless nieces and nephews, including Catherine Berchok, Veronica Devita, Caryn Loehr, and AJ Klos. She will also be fondly remembered by her dog, Peanut, and many friends and neighbors in Brookline and beyond.
Edith’s love for life and others uplifted so many. Her legacy lives on in the countless warm memories she leaves behind—memories filled with generosity, a sense of togetherness, and lots of laughter. We will always remember her, and would be remiss not to share something she often instilled: to always appreciate time spent together sharing in an abundance of good food.
Family and friends will be received at the Frank F. DeBor Funeral Home, 1065, Brookline Boulevard, 412-561-0380, on Monday, March 30, 2026 only, 2-8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of Resurrection, Saint Teresa of Kolkata Parish.
