On 9/16/2024, DANIEL G. KOVACS ("DANNY"), of Brookline, won his final victory after a lifetime of them, claiming a decisive triumph over cancer.
The son of the late Daniel Kovacs Jr. and Elizabeth “Betty” Kovacs (Tusai), his legacy lives on through his three children whom are forever grateful for the wisdom he imparted, the values he instilled, and for forever being our superhero: Daniel K. Kovacs, Jennifer Kaiser (Keith), and Thomas Kovacs (Stacey), seven grandchildren that were the apples of his eye: Laszlo Kovacs, Keith Kaiser Jr., Kevin Kaiser, Kody Kaiser, Paige Kovacs, Timothy Kovacs, and Chase Kovacs, and one great grandchild who was the pride and joy of his later years: Kane Kaiser.
Danny’s life was a life well lived. A proud Army veteran like his father before him, Danny served his country when called upon on two separate tours in Vietnam, achieving the rank of Sergeant, and earning the nickname “Rock” from his squad mates for his fearlessness and reliability. After returning from his second tour, Danny joined the Pittsburgh Police and had an illustrious career spanning 33 years that included walking a beat on Brookline Boulevard, working as motorcycle officer, as a K-9 officer with his beloved partners Fritz and Rommel, and concluding his career in narcotics, retiring having achieved the rank of Detective. Danny had a lifelong love of football and loved watching Penn State play on Saturdays. He was also an avid motorcyclist who rode his Harley Davidsons whenever he could, including a memorable trip to Daytona Beach’s annual bike rally. Danny was also an avid weightlifter. His friends didn’t call him “Big Dan” for nothing.
Danny is also survived by his sister, Linda White of El Paso, TX, his nephews Jason Palfreeman and Mark Palfreeman, and niece Brandee Palfreeman. The family also wishes to express its eternal gratitude to his dear friend Chet Collins for being a rock for Danny to lean on in his final days.
Family and friends will be received at FRANK F. DEBOR FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, INC., 1065 Brookline Blvd., Pittsburgh, PA 15226, (412) 561-0380, on Thursday, September 19, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., to join together and celebrate his life. A Blessing Service will be held beginning at 7:45 on Thursday evening. All who knew Danny are welcome to join us in remembering our beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend as he takes the next step on his journey.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation or the Western Pennsylvania Police Benevolent Foundation in Danny’s name.
