On Sunday, May 27, 2018, Kathryn “BURTE” John, age 90 of Pittsburgh, fell asleep in the Lord with her loving daughter, Kweilin Nassar, by her side in the UPMC Canterbury Family Hospice and Palliative Care. Born October 16, 1927, in Masontown, PA, she was the daughter of the late Abraham and Aneecie John of Brownsville, PA, and was preceded in death by her sister Patsy Ruth Altman and brothers Ralph “Bucky” John (Evelyn) of Pittsburgh, George John (Catherine) of Emaus, PA, and David John (Kathryn) of Brownsville, PA. She is survived by her daughter and countless nieces, nephews and cousins.
Burte was a devoted member of St. George Antiochian Orthodox Cathedral in Oakland. She worked for 40 years at the Pennsylvania/Conrail Railroad before retiring and starting a second 14-year career in the events department at WQED. She enjoyed her ethnic roots from Syria, the music and especially the dancing. Her magnetic personality drew people to her and she embraced children lovingly and adults with her special insight on advice.
Friends are welcome on Thursday, May 31 from 2-8 p.m. at St. George Antiochian Orthodox Cathedral, 3400 Dawson Street, (Oakland) Pittsburgh, PA 15213. Trisagion Prayers will be held at 7 p.m. On Friday, June 1, a short viewing will be held at St. George Antiochian Orthodox Cathedral from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. followed by the Funeral Service at 10:30 a.m. Family and Friends are welcome to attend the Mercy Luncheon in the St. George Social Hall immediately following the Funeral Service. Trisagion Prayers will be held at Jefferson Memorial Cemetery and Chapel at 2:00 p.m. and all are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be sent to the St. George Antiochian Orthodox Cathedral Building Fund, 3400 Dawson Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15213.
